I think, we should be grateful to Magellan because of his expedition, our country was discovered and he proved that the the earth is round. Because of his initiative and intelligence with persuasion to pursue his mission, Magellan is considered a legendary. His indeed a person due of honor.

for me, Ferdinand Magellan accidentally discovered the Philippine Islands. His first goal is to find the Spice Island for the king of Spain. He was used to believe that the island he found(some parts of Eastern Visayas) was the Spice Island.

For me,Magellan`s expedition to the Philippines is accidental..Because he never planned to go in the Phil. at all..Because his planned is to find the spice island or the mollucas island for the Spain..but he accidentally landed in Cebu..(genna polinar)

  5. Laiza Jumawid Sojon says:

Magellan’s expedition to the Philippines was accidental..why? it is because his original plan is to reach the “spice island” in the service of the Spanish crown,he led the first Spanish naval expedition that sailed westward from Europe and crossed the Pacific Ocean to Asia. He was the first European explorer to reach the Philippine archipelago whom he thought is the said island and brought it to European attention.
His expedition consisted of five ships – Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepcion, Victoria, and Santiago – 270 men. It left San Lucar de Barrameda, Spain, on September 20, 1519. Mutinies, hunger, and privations decimated the crew. With only 150 men left and three ships, the expedition reached Homonhon Island, Philippines, on March 16, 1521.

  6. Precious May Montalban says:

It was an accidental………..because Ferdinand Magellan was looking for the spice island but he suddenly discovered an island on eastern visayas.

  7. Precious May Montalba says:

I agree that Ferdinand Magellan expedition in the philippines was an accidental…because of looking and finding the Spice Island,,so he discovered the island on eastern visayas.

      hehe.its ok couz

    • dan jethro says:

i do not agree that Ferdinand Magellan was accidentally discover philippines… why? note that he have his most trusted slave, that is enrique, which considered as a filipino because he can speak visayan language. there’s a tendency that enrique told to his master (magellan) about the wealth of the philippines. therefore it bacame a contingency plan to go to spice island so that there'[s a reason for them to be approved by the king of spain. if Magellan is reaaly intended to go to spice island, is there any proof what is the first word he say to the natives in the philippines?

  9. azel jee lomod says:

i think it was planned bcuz the coming of the Spaniard to the Philippines have 3 major reasons.
    these are:
    a. First, the Spaniards were looking for an alternated route to the east. This route will help them for a faster travel to reach other countries.
b.Second, it was the age of discovery. This age of discovery was a period when European nations like Spain wants to discover lands, spices, and gold.
c.Third, Spain wants to make their territory bigger. They also used the cross (Christianity) to spread their colony.
And since Magellan is an Portuguese explorer who led the epedition so it was palnned.Magellan was suported by the king of the Spain becuz when the major trade routes were closed, he thought that the Western Route can be used. So he offered his service to the king of Portugal. However, he was turned down because his idea was impossible according to the king.

so for me…it was really a planned :)_azel jee lomod

  10. irish jane mesagrande says:

yes,I agree.. with what polinar, montalban and others..said.Magellan expedition in the philippines is not really planned, they accidentally reached the phil.but actually magellan`s group plan to find the mollucas island or spice island`but instead they reach CEBU.he was received in an amiable manner of the chief of the island of cebu Rajah Humabon.he then proceed to the subdue of the neihboring island of Mactan and encoutered with the Lapu-LAPU GROUPS and killed….IRISH JANE MESAGRANDE

  11. irish jane mesagrande says:

After Magellan`s death Humabon and some other offecer who survived, they continued to find the island of mollucas using the two ships Trinidad and Victoria, sailing from phil. to mollucas

  12. jocelinda sarce says:

for me,it was both accidentally and planned because, before magellan came in the philippines .he already planned to travel around the world ,but he was accidentally arrived in the philippines in which , there are some people don`t like of what he want to happen in the philippines.-jocelinda sarce

  13. MARIA ELENA ANGAC says:

For me,Magellan’s expedition to the Philippines is accidental but planned
although Magellan had studied a lot about previous navigations of some Spanish navigators he had no idea how big the waters of the Pacific is.He only figured it out when they were already in the midst of the expedition. They went through a lot of obstacles in the midst of the sea.Despite of it,they continued to navigate to reach the Spice Islands. It became a long voyage which had costed them a lot so they had to find an island where they can make a refill of provisions.Beacuse they did not succeed to make a full refill of provisions in Guam, they pursued the navigation.Magellan ACCIDENTALLY discovered an island,in the Visayas.Magellan’s fleet PLANNED to stop by our country because they need to have a refill for their provisions and repair their ships to continue their voyage to the Spice Islands. To make this possible he tried to befriend the king of the natives and spread the Catholicism to the natives to make the most out of thier long voyage. who planned to use his fleet to defeat another king in the nearby island.Magellan only planned to stay in the Philippines for days but he was involved in a local political war which caused his life…

For me,Magellan’s expedition to the Philippines was planned and at the same time,accidental..it’s planned b’c0z as a Portuguese maritime explorer while he is also in the service of the king of Spain ,instead of having only 1 goal on his voyage w/c is to find the spice islands or the Moluccas, he then also include the 2 remaining major reasons of the Spaniards in coming to the Phil. w/c are to look for an alternated route in the east that will lead them to a faster travel on the other countries and to make their territory bigger as well as to erect the cross(Christianity) to spread their colony..on the other hand, it was then accidental, too because along their(Magellan and his men so also w/ other captains) journey while travelling the westward route, instead of arriving in the spice islands/Moluccas,their fleet arrived at Homonhon island, southeast of Samar on March 16,1521 w/c he named the Archipelago of San Lazaru, where they erected a cross, and claimed the lands for Spain..

    • joan saga says:

For me, Magellan’s expedition to the Philippines was accidental. Magellan’s real purpose was to find the SPICE ISLANDS or the Moluccas. But because of having encountered certain circumstances while having their voyage, they arrived at the island of Homonhon, southeastern part of Samar on March 16,1521.

  15. Baquero,Antonette says:

for me, Magellan’s expedition to the Philippines was accidental. Their plan was to find the Moluccas or the spice island. Last March 16,1521 they accidentally reached Homonhon Island. They make friend w/ the chieftains and spread the Catholicism .Magellan was successful in spreading their religion and he never mind their plan to the spice island that even his men don’t agree. Because of this, he planned to conquer Mactan Island.Lapu-Lapu and his men made a battle w/ Magellan that causes his death.

  18. Amabelle Limbaga says:

For me,the expidition of Magellan in the Phil. is accidental bec. as they travel in the way to Moluccas Island or the Spice Island, the path in going to the said place was blocked by the muslim turk.So they decided to find the other ruote in going to their destination.By March 16,1521 they first sighted and arrived in Homonhon Island.
The filipinos were influence by the Spanish through the religion being taught and shared to the Filipinos. So Magellan and his people continued what they have started.

  19. loida lingatong says:

For me, I agree of what the others answer that the expedition of Magellan in the Phil. is NOT planned it is accidentally because Magellan looking for Spice Island. They accidentally reached the Phil. Island. On March 16,1521 they arrived in the Homonhon Island until they reached the Mactan Island and Magellan killed Lapu2x.

  20. chariza Banga says:

Magellan’s Expedition demonstrated human capacity for adventure, exploration and discovery…I am favor with majority answer.
The significance of his expedition and main goal was to find the Spice Island, currently named Moluccas sland. He “accidentally discovered” an island in eastern Visayas, part of the phillippines and was later killed in a neiboring island,Mactan. He wants to conquer the island but he failed..magellan showed that discovering great things in life belongs only to those who are not afraid to face the unknown.

  21. rafael caitom says:

For me, ah Magellan expedition in the Philippine is accidental…………….because Magellan was to find the Spice Island, currently named Malaku Island. He accidentally “discovered” an island in Eastern Visayas,, and was later killed by Lapu Lapu in a neighboring island, Mactan. The excerpt of Magellan expedition in the Philippine is to proved that our world is round. And that why Magellan accidental in his expedition in the Philippine.

  22. Lalynjane Palingcod says:

For me,Magellan’s expedition in the Philippine is a planned because he want to control Philippines to keep away from other countries;grabbing the colonization. Also he after the wealth and spice trade of our country .

  23. janmarie jaum says:

For me it was planned because aside from looking the spice islands they wants to find other route to reach the other countries but unfortunately magellan was killed by lapu-lapu.

  24. Precious May Montalban says:

Now, I realized that it was all planned by Magellan because of the discussion.. But that expedition is one of the most important historical event in our country because of its positive effect to our tradition, culture and religion. That’s why it is always discuss in some schools in any level.

Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition was planned through the help of “King of Spain” he traveled the pacific ocean to Asia until he accidentally discovered the Philippines specifically the Island of visayas. He was killed in the battle of Mactan Cebu. Only 18 survived and one ship, Trinidad, returned to Spain. His expedition demonstrated human capacity for adventure, exploration, and discovery. Magellan showed that discovering great things in life belongs only to those who are not afraid to face the unknown..

  26. Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition was planned but at the same time i consider it to be accidental. He was looking for a westward route to the to the Spice Islands of Indonesia(Mollucas) passing the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean but instead, his expedition reached the island of Homonhon in the Philippines. No European had seen these islands before, but Magellan knew he was close to the Moluccas, because his personal Moluccan slave, Enrique, understood some of the language of the natives.Magellan did not stop anywhere for long until he reached the central island of Cebu… – PRIXIE CARA DOLIENTE

  27. Cecile Simbajon says:

Magellan expedition was a planned because he want to find Spice Island that currently name Moluccas Island .After that plan ,he arrived Philippine on March 16 1521 at Homonhon Island.but sad to say he killed lapu lapu.

Ferdinand Magellan is one of history’s most courageous explorer. A native of Portugal he renounced allegiance to the Portuguese crown and became as Spanish subject because the Portuguese king had not awarded his service to the crown as a officer and soldier in the Portuguese position in India and Malacca in 1519. Magellan was commissioned by the king Charles I of Spain to head an expedition of 5 ships the Moluccas. A detailed account of how Magellan ACCIDENTALLY discovered the Philippines and opened European influence in the Spice Island.

  30. Marian Rose N. Bailo says:

Ferdinand Magellan ACCIDENTALLY discovered the Philippines. Because the main reason of their expedition is to search of a westward route to the “Spice Islands” (modern MALUKU ISLANDS in Indonesia), The expedition was funded largely by the Spanish Crown provided with ships supplies for two years of travel. They reached different islands and one of that is the Homonhon in the Phlippines on March 17 with 150 crew left. Members of his expedition became the first Spaniards to reached the Philippine archipelago, but they were not the first European.

  31. lorebie l.galviso says:

magellan’s expedition was planned,he asked help to the king of spain and renounced his nationality .he told the king that he knows a secret passage between the pacific ocean and atlantic ocean.the king of spain give him 250 men and 5 ships (conception, san antonio, santiago, trinidad and victoria.for 4 years and 6 months they travel across the ocean,on march 16,1521 magellan discover the phillipines.
